Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.

James Baldwin

We at MSCA are watching and listening as racial injustices again rise to the surface of our collective consciousness. We join in with experiences of fear, despair, sadness and confusion. We recognize the pervasive impact of centuries of systemic and endemic oppression that affect us at the macro level of our social systems and at the microlevel, producing individual trauma. We acknowledge the artificiality of racial constructs that are so real in their impact on our lives, and the source of divisiveness and trauma.

Some trauma is captured on the screens of media and of memory and some trauma, equally insidious, results from the accumulation of smaller experiences that really are not so easily brushed off. Trauma produces big feelings, too often stifled and trapped. Feelings that seep out sidewise impact physical health, undermine the sense of self, the experience of joy, the ability to connect meaningfully with one another and to fully engage skills and talents. It affects our individual lives, the joined lives of couples, the rearing of children in families and engagement in broader social circles.

We at MSCA believe that healing comes when feelings are given room to expand into words; when the affective experiences are witnessed and validated; when thoughts, values and beliefs are explored, examined and refined.

We are committed to listening, to witnessing, to affirming and to healing the emotional wounds caused by big trauma and festering small traumas. We are committed to looking at trauma caused by racial injustices in all our clients. We are committed to advocating for improved access to care for those experiencing racial injustice. We are committed to ongoing learning for ourselves of the impact that racism has on our lives and practice so that we can better serve.

Main Street Clinical Associates, P.A., founded in 1984, is an interdisciplinary private practice group providing comprehensive mental health services to the Triangle.

MSCA strives to make mental health services accessible and affordable by participating in a variety of health insurance programs. We also file insurance forms for our clients' convenience. At the same time, we realize that some people prefer to bypass their insurance plans altogether because of constraints related to choice of clinician, treatment autonomy or concerns about confidentiality.

For more information about our services or to talk with a therapist about a referral, please call 919-286-3453.

OUR COMMITMENT TO THE COMMUNITY

Main Street Clinical Associates deeply values our relationship with Durham and the surrounding communities. Being a part of the Triangle community has enriched our lives, both professionally and personally. Each year MSCA donated funds to local organizations that support community well-being in the areas of mental health, physical health, LGBTQ issues, homelessness, and the arts. We welcome your suggestions for future charitable donations.
